[ Klein Tools Modbox Shelf Mod ]
Overview
This was a product of necessity. I find myself stacking tools and materials on top of my toolbox when working in the field. It makes sense, I don’t like to leave things on the floor, and near a door there’s rarely a fitting table or other surface.
The problem with that is then I need a screw or a connector, and I have to move everything to get to it. I had been thinking for a while about how to add a shelf that is quick to deploy or remove, doesn’t add too much weight, and could stow away while in transport. I’m not sure where the thought came from for this design, but one day it clicked.
Build Process
The next slow day I had, I looked around for some materials and found a scrap of plywood and a piano hinge laying around the shop. Amazingly, the ply was already the correct width, and the length was perfect to cut all 4 pieces for two shelves out of. My wife would call that kismet. I had to notch a couple corners, and add the lip that locks into the accessory rail (glued and brad nailed), and that was it.
